Welcome to BCHS Music 2012-2013

Dear Music Students and Parents,

As many of you are already aware, my name is Diego Bechthold, and I am the music teacher at BCHS.  I wish to welcome all of you to one of the most exciting experiences in which you can be a part – the music program!  Now, more than ever, we have information to justify why we participate in this demanding, yet rewarding, activity.  Experts have concluded that the study of music helps with spatial reasoning, test taking, and overall quality of life!  Factor in social skills, emotional development, leadership training, group interaction, aesthetic perception, music-making, and the discipline of being in a music program, and I don’t know why anyone would not want to be involved in a potentially successful music program like the one we can have here at BCHS.  The ultimate goal is a lifelong understanding and

We will be having our music program’s Annual General Meeting on Wednesday September 19, at 7:00 pm in the music room for all music parents and students where we will be discussing several fundraising events to help raise money for our music events this year, along with deciding what music trips, festivals and events (such as the Wake-A-Thon in October) we will be participating in this year, and finally organizing details for our first concert on October 18.  This meeting will be divided into two parts.  The first part will be for all music students and parents in grades 9 – 12 which will include a brief discussion of the Banff Music Retreat for all Grade 9 Band students.  Also during this time we will invite any new music parents to join our music-parent volunteer group. No music program can be successful without the help and support of a strong music-parent group, and as such I would like to formally invite any of you who are willing to commit your time and energy to participate in this group.   The second part will be for all music students and parents in grades 10 – 12 who are attending the China Trip 2013, where we will be discussing details such as payment deadlines, travel visas, notarized letters of permission, fundraising, etc.

All Music Students and Parents are needed to attend this meeting, as we need your input into these matters.  Participation in the BCHS Music Program includes attending all festivals, concerts, events and trips.

I would also like to take this opportunity to send out some dates for upcoming concerts, festivals and trips for this upcoming year; some will be tentative and information will be forthcoming to the students via announcements in the classroom, and to parents via e-mail and letters sent home with students.  (NOTE:  All Music Students are expected to be at concerts one hour prior to noted start-time of event).

BOTTLE DRIVES:  All music students in grades 9 – 12 and any parents who can help with driving, etc., are expected to attend our Bottle Drive events this year.  Proceeds from our bottle drives will go into each attending student’s individual fundraising account which is then used to help offset the cost of the China Trip or Banff Music Retreat.  The reason we have so many this year is to give our music students as many opportunities as possible to help raise money for the China Trip.  Our Bottle Drive dates are:  Saturday September 15, 9 am – 1pm; Saturday October 13, 9 am – 1 pm; Saturday November 17, 9 am – 1pm; Saturday December 15; 9 am – 1pm; Saturday January 5, 9 am – 1pm.

On Friday September 28, at Nose Creek Park during the afternoon, our Sr. High Jazz Band (and TBD other Sr. High Ensembles such as the Choir) will be performing at the Airdrie Artember Event.

On Thursday, October 18th, at 7:00 pm in the theatre, we will have our Fall Music Concert, which will involve all of our ensembles.

On Tuesday, November 20th, our Senior High Jazz Band will participate in the Didsbury Jazz Festival in Didsbury, which also includes attending an evening concert  - the Ray Charles Tribute Orchestra at the Olds Theatre!

On Monday, December 10th, at 7:30pm in the theatre, our Concert Choir will be participating in the Airdrie Community Christmas Singfest (NOTE:  All Choir Students must attend combined rehearsals: on Monday, November 19, 7:30pm at the Lutheran Church of the Master, 216 Main Street S, Airdrie; and on Monday December 10, 6:00pm at the BCHS Theatre, prior to the concert)

On Wednesday, December 12th, at 7:00 pm in the theatre, we will have our Christmas Concert, which will again feature all of our ensembles.

TENTATIVE: In mid-February, we will go on a Banff Music Retreat (includes clinics), which will involve the Grade 9 Concert Band.  Students in this ensemble will need to fundraise for this – details of the cost will be forthcoming.

TENTATIVE:  All of our ensembles could be participating in the Olds Kiwanis Music Festival, on a single or over 2 days in mid-March

All of our Concert Bands (grade 9 and Senior High) will be participating in the RVSD Concert Band Festival.  This event will be held at Mt. Royal College over two days in late May.

From Friday March 29 to Saturday April 6 2013, the majority of our grade 10 – 12 music students in all ensembles will be participating in a music trip to China, which we’ve been planning for the past year and a half.  Further details to this will be presented via newsletter/e-mail/meetings throughout the school year.  Final Payment for this will be due on January 16 2013.

On Friday May 10, our Sr. High Jazz Band will be presenting our annual Swing City Event at Woodside Golf Course Restaurant.  This is a fun and exciting event where our Jazz Band performs over three hours of lively swing/rock/dance music.  This event also includes dinner and dancing (with dance instruction) and is open to anyone in the community to attend.  Details regarding times/tickets will be forthcoming.

Finally, on Wednesday June 5, at 7:00pm in the Theatre, we will have our Year-End 2013 Music Concert, which will involve all of our ensembles.

As well, there may be other performing opportunities that present themselves throughout the year.  I will do my best to pass on those dates and places, along with solid dates for the above-mentioned concerts, as soon as I can.

Finally, I have a reminder to all music students, particularly those in grade 9, that you are to ensure that you have your own supply of reeds, valve oil, slide grease, cleaning kits, etc. These can be purchased at any music store; St. John’s Music or Long  & McQuade or Music Direct, all in Calgary, are probably your best bet to find everything you will need. Make sure that in the case of reeds and oil, you have more than enough, as you don’t want to run out during a performance.  As well, all percussionists are traditionally expected to have (purchase) their own of the following:

    * at least two pairs of snare drums sticks, 5A and/or 7B

    * a pair of general timpani mallets

    * a pair of rubber xylophone mallets, Musser Blue or Musser Green

    * a pair of yarn mallets

    * a stick bag

In order to ensure that important information such as concert dates, fundraising events, money deadlines, etc. get home to parents, I would ask if everyone could fill out the bottom portion of this letter, detach it and hand it in to me by no later than Friday September 12.  PLEASE INCLUDE YOUR SURNAMES.
