Swing City Tickets

Friendly reminder to purchase your Swing City Tickets ASAP. We require numbers for our caterer and further planning.

How do you get your tickets? Please have your student purchase tickets from Mr. B at the school (cash) or arrange payment via office (debit or credit) and TICKETS CAN ALSO BE PURCHASED ONLINE FOLLOWING THE ATTACHED INSTRUCTIONS, if you purchase via the office or online, please ensure your student presents the receipt to Mr. Bechtold in exchange for the actual tickets.

To ensure equality, each family will be allowed to purchase up to a maximum of 8 tickets. After April 10th, remaining tickets will be available for those families wanting more than 8.

What is Swing City? A super fun event filled with great food, live jazz music topped off with group Swing Dance lessons that you can either partake in OR people watch.

When? May 2nd doors open at 6, dinner at 6:30, Jazz Band performance and dancing to follow.

Where? Overtime Restaurant upstairs at the Ron Ebbesen Arena

How Much? $30/ticket includes a delightful meal, incredible Jazz Music and super fun dance lessons.

Jazz Band performing at BCHS 30th Anniversary Celebration

Tuesday March 25 the BCHS Jazz Band will perform as part of that evening's BCHS 30th Anniversary Celebration, featuring arrangements and compositions by our own jazz band students

Tuesday March 18, the BCHS Choir will perform at 3:00 pm in the BCHS Theatre

Wednesday March 19, the BCHS Concert Band will perform at 1:45 pm, and the BCHS Jazz Band will perform at 3:15 pm at Grace Baptist Church

Saturday's Bottle Drive - CANCELLED

My apologies for any inconvenience this may cause, but I am making the decision to cancel this Saturday's bottle drive due to extreme cold weather.  Our next bottle drive will be Saturday March 22.

New York City Music Trip - Information Evening - Feb 12 @ 7PM

Next Wednesday February 12, at 7 pm in the music room, we will be having an important information evening in regards to our planned New York City Music Trip, that we are undertaking in early May of 2015 (and what we've been primarily fundraising for with our bottle drives, poinsettia sales, etc.).  We are inviting all parents and music students (band, choir, jazz band) in grades 9 - 11 to this meeting.

Cindy Westby, our tour rep. with A Balancing Act Educational Tours (she organized the NYC trip for Chestermere High last year and is organizing Chestermere and Cochrane High's trip to Japan this year), will be mostly speaking at this meeting, where we will be outlining a tentative itinerary of all the performances, clinics and activities that we plan to do in New York, as well as the potential final costs.  My primary goal at this meeting is to also get a final sense of how many students are committed to going on this trip. As we mentioned at the general meeting that we had for all parents and students last September, a music trip such as this can only happen if we get around 90% of all students committed to participating in it, due to us traveling as a performing group.  We will therefore also be setting a date for the initial non-refundable deposit towards this trip.

I have taken an informal blind vote in the music classes and I was reassured to see that almost 100% of students in grades 9 - 11 were planning on going on this trip.  A few of these students did show that even though they are planning on going to the trip, they or their parents are unable to come to next Wednesday's meeting.  If your son/daughter is unable to come, but one you are, that is fine (or vice versa).  If neither you or your child are able to come, just let me know and we will do our best to give out any handouts/info to your child during the next band/choir class they have.

Jazz Band to perform at Alberta Teacher's Convention

Our jazz band was asked to perform at this year's Alberta Teacher's Convention.  

Date: Thursday Feb. 20
The bus will depart at 6:45 am.  
The jazz band will perform as a prelude from 8:15 - 8:45 am, and then perform O Canada at 8:50 am right before the keynote address.  
The jazz band will also play as a demo band as part of a session I am leading from 12:00 - 1:15 pm
The bus will pick up the students at 1:30 pm to return them to BCHS.  

A bus will be provided to transport the students to and from the Telus Convention Centre in Calgary.  

We will need a couple of parents who can accompany the students on the bus that day.  If you are able to assist, please let me know by sending me an email. 

Food Kiosk Fundraiser

Dear BCHS Music Parents and students,


We have been offered an opportunity to put together a food kiosk for the KARZ RC Racing event being held at BCHS December 6th-8th.  This will be a group fundraiser where the general music fund will be the major recipient of all proceeds.  The general music fund is used for many things including but not limited to renting instruments when far from home (ie China or New York), purchasing music scores, replacing and refurbishing instruments, travel expenses such as trips for provincial championships, and of course pre-purchasing items such as the recent hoody order and poinsettia order.  We need at least one general fundraiser per year to keep the music groups liquid.  As with all past fundraisers we will be giving back to the community – please read the exerpt from the attached fundraising sponsorship letter.


“Bert Church High School Music groups are putting together a food kiosk at the KARZ RC Racing event being held at the BCHS gymnasium December 7th and 8th.  The BCHS “Racing in Harmony” fundraiser will contribute 30% of all proceeds plus any monetary donations to the "Build a Wall" Airdrie Food Bank fundraiser.  We will be working in "harmony" in order to raise funds towards the food bank as well as the highly anticipated music trip to New York in 2015.  We will need a variety of food and drink items as well as paper products to make our fundraiser a success (please see suggested list below).  Your generosity is appreciated and will be identified and acknowledged at the event.  BCHS music believes in giving back to our community and we are excited to once again pick the Airdrie Food bank as our charity recipient.”


Your lead fundraiser coordinator is Maggie Csori with teammates Danielle Domshy, Karen Paynter, and Melinda Pryor.  We will need a minimum of 45 students and 10 additional adult volunteers to make this fundraiser a success.  We will need all the items noted on the attached letter which we are hoping to have donated by local supermarkets and other businesses.  We will also be needing people willing to cook Chilli, bake cookies and other sellable treats such as rice krispi squares and puffed wheat squares. 


A sign-up sheet will be going up in the music room for students to pick a volunteer spot.  Each slot will be 3 hours long and will be arranged as per the following:

  • Friday:   Set up – 5-8pm (4 student spots/time slot)
  • Saturday7:30am – 10:30am; 10am – 1pm; 12:30pm – 3:30pm; 3pm – 6pm; 5:30pm – 9pm (4 student spots/time slot)
  • Sunday:  7:30am – 10:30am; 10am – 1pm; 12:30pm – 3:30pm; 2:30pm – 5:30pm (4 student spots/time slot)


Adult volunteers are needed for all slots as well – please send your availability to Maggie.


Please encourage your child to share their time.  Being a volunteer is not only personally rewarding but it also a real benefit when applying for educational scholarships, applying for a jobs etc.

First Bottle Drive was a big success

I just wanted to let all of you know how successful our first bottle drive was.  

Total student participation was 41 students,  and total raised was  $2,686.00! success
